Storage Design tips and Ideas

Fridges, freezers and other white goods should be thoroughly DRY and CLEAN before storing. Whilst in storage the door should be secured slightly ajar. A deodoriser placed inside fridges or freezers is also a good idea to maintain freshness. Don't place items inside fridges or freezers as the shelves and linings can be easily marked and damaged .

Consider adding indirect lighting to a cove or soffit above the closet space. This especially looks beautiful in high ceilings where direct lighting may be a challenge.

Storage Adding brand new cabinets

Empty the contents of wardrobes, drawers and cupboards to protect the shelving and structure of these items. Clothing and personal goods should be packed in strong secure cartons with some naphthalene, mothballs or similar product to protect and maintain their condition. Where possible remove the legs from items of furniture e.g.. bed bases, tables etc. to avoid damage and save space. Vacuum food crumbs from lounges to prevent attracting vermin

Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and top of cartons containing breakables. Protect fragile items by wrapping them individually in packing paper (newsprint can be very messy and possibly stain). Nest cups and bowls, stand plates, sauce platters, casseroles on their edges. Fill any gaps the cartons with packing e.g.: scrunched paper linen. This will keep your fragile items well protected and prevent them from moving around in the cartons whilst in transit. Label all cartons containing fragile items and avoid storing heavy items on the top of these cartons.

Your electrical equipment is very delicate and sensitive and should be handled with care. The original boxes are ideal to repack in. However wrapping items individually in bubble wrap, packing them in cartons, and sealing the top will offer protection for your electrical items. Remember to pack out any gaps in the cartons. Turntables and tone arms of record players should be secured to prevent damage whilst they are being moved. Pack records on their edges in to prevent warping.

Lighting can make a master bedroom closet feel more upscale with the addition of puck lights or incandescent can lights amongst closet organization systems.

If you are puzzled about solving your own lighting dilemma, consider hiring a professional light designer that will maximize your lighting sources and will assess your current challenges. Often time’s designers can help you save money with innovative products and tips.

Storage Consider the day-to-day experience

Consider the day-to-day experience of sorage and fing items in your home.

  • Inspect your storage unit and make a list of the packing accessories which you will need. Commonly used packing aids include such items as newsprint or wrapping paper, bubble pack, tape, rope, drop cloths, polyurethane sheeting, mattress and furniture covers, pallets, skids, dehumidifiers and cartons, most of which are available for purchase at the main office.
  • Place a pallet on the floor, Do not lean items against walls. Leaving air space around the unit's perimeter will aid ventilation. Leave a walkway to the rear of the unit. Use all the space available, including its height. Disassemble items such as bed frames.
  • Place frequently used items near the door.
  • Fill Containers to capacity. Partially full or bulging cartons may tip or collapse. Heavy items such as books or tools should be packing in small boxes. If a carton is too heavy, it will be hard to lift and should be divided between two or more cartons.
  • Sensor lights that operate with a magnetic strip upon the opening and closing of a closet door could be a perfect option for your home. LED lights cost less than incandescent lights to operate and emit a brighter light. Consider visiting a local lighting store to see new lighting options available on the market.
  • Fragile items should be cushioned by packing and placed toward the top of the unit.
  • Label cartons and take home a list of the labelled cartons for easy reference when you need to locate your property.
  • Take inventory of your closet and ensure you need all the contents. If you don’t, purge them and make your closet as simple as possible. Lighting that can spread to all corners is a major asset

Storage Light and brightness

What are the lighting requirements of the activities planned for the storage room? Do existing windows provide adequate sunlight

Storage rooms and closets are the number one space that home owners wish they had more room for in their homes. Storage and a place to accumulate belongings will always be a challenge for home builders. Another factor that plagues home owners is how to light their ‘too-small’ closets. For some, walk-in closets become dressing rooms but the lighting makes it difficult to see well. While small closets need new lighting sources for the space to be usable. Here are tips to help you light your storage room and closet areas

For those that have an existing lighting fixture inside of their closet, consider installing brighter bulbs to reflect more light. Consider installing CFL (Compact Florescent Light bulbs) to save energy and to emit a brighter light.

For smaller closets a battery operated lighting fixture is a good option. Varieties come in wall mounted fixtures, and ceiling mounted varieties. Consider the frequency of use in this storage area. If you find yourself running through batteries, it may be better to hard wire a lighting source in the closet

If your closet is on an exterior wall, consider adding a window to bring in natural light. The cost it takes to install a window may outweigh the energy costs to light it with a fixture for the 20 years!

Solar tubes use metallic and reflective surfaces to bounce sunlight from the roof down into your home space, or closet. This tube can qualify some U.S. home buyers for home energy efficient tax incentives as well as keep your energy bill down, due to the use of natural sunlight for lighting.
